Ever since we opened the theatre doors 3 years ago and even longer on the cafe side I have wanted a Jazz band within our walls and we finally are getting it….oooohhh that saxaphone how I love thee!! Jacob Do will be performing April 9th in the Grande Parlour with his 5 pc Jazz Band.

Bio (Band):

Canadian saxophonist, composer and arranger Jacob Do leads a group of Montreal and Edmonton musicians that culminates in an energetic and sophisticated jazz ensemble. With strong roots in the jazz tradition, the group aims to deliver a high level of improvisation that includes aspects of storytelling and interaction. Jacob, Max Zhang (trumpet), David Rourke (guitar), and Daniel Verdecchia (drums) are all current students at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, where they have studied with some of North America’s finest musicians, including Remi Bolduc, Kevin Dean, John Hollenbeck, and Andre White, among others. They are backed by Edmonton musician Paul Johnston on Bass. Together, the band presents Jacob’s original compositions, arrangements, and classic jazz standards in an refreshing way while remaining connected to the history of America’s original art form.

Bio (Personal):

Jacob Do is a versatile jazz saxophonist whose unique sound lends itself to emotional storytelling through improvisation. Do focuses on expressing his artistry in a refreshing way while remaining to connected to America’s original art form. Jacob plays a variety of music, including jazz standards and original compositions and arrangements based in the jazz tradition. His influences stem from several saxophonists, including Lester Young and Sonny Rollins to more modern musicians like Seamus Blake. He is currently based in Montreal, QC, where he is quickly establishing himself as a prominent voice in the city’s music scene.  

Do was born and raised in Edmonton, AB, where he received his formative music education, studying with Juno-award winning musician Jeremiah McDade. During his youth, Jacob was a member of “The Littlebirds” an all-star youth jazz program called directed by Edmonton trumpeter Joel Gray. Attending many shows at Canada’s longest volunteer-run jazz club, the Yardbird Suite, Jacob was exposed to a high level of jazz throughout his teenage years. In May 2019, Jacob returned to Edmonton to perform his first show as a bandleader at the Yardbird, which featured pianist Bob Kitt, bassist John Taylor, and drummer Mike Gillespie.   

 Jacob moved to Montreal in September 2017 to pursue his jazz education at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, where he has studied with saxophonists Remi Bolduc, Donny Kennedy, and Masashi Usui, among others. Jacob has also been a member of McGill Jazz Orchestra I, directed by Juno-award winning saxophonist and composer Christine Jensen. Jacob has also shared the stage with many of Canada’s jazz greats, including Kevin Dean, Jens Lindemann and the late Tommy Banks.  

 Jacob is the recipient of several awards, including the inaugural Oliver Jones Award (2019), presented by the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal and Stingray Music. Created as part of the Festival’s 40th anniversary, the award is given every year to a student studying in Quebec who identifies as a visible minority; it honours the living legacy of great pianist Oliver Jones, whose career was devoted to developing and inspiring young artists. Jacob was also awarded a Stingray Rising Star Award that same year at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival. Remi Bolduc praises Jacob as “a musician of great talent, and his success comes from a combination of daily practice and his musicality.”

The Cold Lake Arts and Entertainment Society is building a foundation of budding thespians and musical artists whom are passionate for the arts. By providing a space that can showcase their talents to in our community in a facility that is unique with incredible sound and acoustics we foster the growth and confidence for individuals to live out their dreams. Our dream one day is to have a Arts School in our community to further mold and give our youth an opportunity to grow and fully express themselves. To create an arts community for the betterment and overall health for everyone!!

Theatre Doors will Open 1 hr prior to showtime.

Beantrees Cafe will be open all evening for meal and drink service.

This is general Admission so arrive early for the best seats.
